by Hannah McLaverty-WilliamsonStevenage Borough Council has teamed up with Stevenage Football Club to highlight to smokers the dangers of second-hand smoke to their children and partners.
The recently launched Smokebusters scheme is urging smokers not to light up in their homes and cars and local parents and pupils from eight schools attended the launch of the scheme at the football club last week.
Smoker Andrew Western a parent of a pupil at Ashtree School, attended the launch where he was breath tested. He was so surprised by the test results he said he would go further than quitting smoking in the house and car.
"I got a shock when I blew into the monitor to have my carbon monoxide levels tested. I was stunned by how high my reading was and it made me realise why I was struggling for breath when i walk the dog. I now know that giving up smoking is my only real option."
A spokesman for the council told The Comet: "Parents can sign up to the scheme by making a commitment to make their homes and cars completely smoke free. This will not only reduce the harm caused to children and others by second-hand smoke, but will also discourage young people from starting to smoke and encourage adults to try to give up."
The scheme asks participants to commit to one thing, keeping their home and car smoke free at all times. Those that worry they could struggle should consider stop smoking hypnotherapy, a popular method being used by those wanting to quit.
By retraining the part of the mind where beliefs about smoking are held it is easier for smokers to replace their habit with healthier behaviours, which in turn make it easier for them to quit for good.
